I had to pre-focus and visually anticipate the arrival of the bird at this point in space to know when to press the shutter button.

This image captures both the rapidly moving bird and some of the natural background light by combining two different exposures of the same scene. One exposure used a very high shutter speed to capture the bird in flight as he was about to land at the nest cavity. The other exposure recorded the same scene (without the bird) at a slower shutter speed to capture the softer ambient light falling on the background.
