Avocet Feeding, Mono Lake 111011-070823-MK4-1229

Small groups of Avocets forage for salt fly larvae along the shores of Mono Lake. Salt flies and brine shrimp are the only aquatic arthropods that can tolerate -- indeed thrive -- in these extremely saline waters, but these two abundant species provide Avocets, grebes, grackles, gulls and other birds with a feast.
